Hello everybody, im in desparate need of help.....again.

Problem:
I cannot perform fresh XP install with hitatchi sata drives.

The facts:
1. I have an ASUS A7N8X deluxe. Jumpers are properly set. Only the red cable is connected. There appears to be no other settings in the bios that i need to change.
2. I have two IDE drives also on this machine. I disconnected these drives while performing the fresh install.
3. I made the A: disk with the txtsetup.oem file and other proper files.
4. It appears that XP installed properly installed the drivers (pressing F6, etc)....everything is fine. I got a message like "installing Silicon image SiI...." on the blue screen.

Then the screen clears and the following message appears:

Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are poweredon adn properly connected to your computer and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. this may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.
Setup cannot continue.

5. I tried the procedure again. Same, bloody error message.

If anybody could lend a hand, i would greatly appreciate the help.

Cheers!

Dumb question, but you said you connected the SATA cable, did you connect a power cable to it also?

Are the drives recognized by the hardware at boot. Either in the BIOS or some other SATA boot screen. If not, you need to correct this issue first.

Reliant,
Yes, i did connect the SATA cable (red, thin cable).

BUT, printed on the hitatchi drive, it reads:
"warning: It is recommended to use either the sata power connector or the leagacy power connector. using both the sata power connector and legacy power connector may cause upredicatble results".

I assumed the, what you called "power cable" is hitatchi's "legacy" cable. And that sata had a power & data single cable design.....maybe i am wrong (hehehehe)

So, then to clarify, i have to connect the white four-pin power cable also??

Thanks very much.

Nitromullet,
Yes, the bios does seem to recognize the drive. The ASUS asks me if i want to enter a raid utility (or someting like that).

Thanks very much.

Yes, there are actually 3 connectors on your drive. One is for SATA data, one for SATA power, and one for legacy power. I use the legacy power with my SATA drive and it works fine. :)

*****UPDATE********

Guys, i need more help!!!!

Yikes.

I installed the SATA drive. things looked pretty good. No problems. Got XP to load.

Then I tried to hook back up an ide drive (i want to transfer this ide data to sata). This ide drive is not bootable and does not have a os installed.....just plain data.

How do i get both to run ide and sata to run on my machine????
When both are hooked up. I get the blue screen of death saying there is no bootable drive.
i think the bios is looking for an ide.

i tried numerous bios settings an nothing works. Now when i try to boot just the sata, i get the same blue screen of death.

any idea???

thanks in advance.

Reliant,
the options i have for boot device are:
floppy
ls120
hd-0
scsi
cdrom
hdd1
hdd2
hdd3
zip
usb fdd
usb zip
usb cdrom
usb hdd
lan
disabled

I have tried all the HD's. Nothing seems to work. It appears the mobo is searching for an IDE as primary boot device and ignoring the sata, even when the sata is the only drive with an OS.

Thanks for the help....any ideas?????

Since this is an nForce motherboard, you *may* have to use SCSI in order to boot the SATA drive. It sounds strange, but most anything onboard that is not the native IDE controller gets lumped into the SCSI category.

You may try it on "disable" as well.

Previous IDE Raid cards (Promise) needed that when booting of it.

I don't know how MBs hadle SATA controllers. It might be like a external device.

Same with most SCSI devices. It's got it's own BIOS.

same thing happened to me when I upgraded to SATA...

just change the BIOS boot-up to SCSI, and it should be fine.

I had a senior moment when I did it, and messed with the partitions, and ended up killing the IDE drive with all the data on it that I planned to migrate over to the new sata drive. /kill self. changing the BIOS to SCSI book allowed the sata drive to boot fine, though (nforce2 mobo)

take my advice: don't mess with partition magic when you've just pulled a double shift and can barely keep your eyes open. lol.

Umm... go into your bios and change your boot devices... instead of ide have it as sata.
