SATA HDD Prob??

I have an asus a7v600 and a WD raptor as my windows drive and a maxtor 80gb partitioned on my 2nd HDD. Both are SATA. RAID is not setup.

Here's what happened.
-yesterday everything was fine
-today i turn on the comp and windows gets to the load screen and goes black and there's no activity
-disconnet the maxtor drive and windows boots fine.
-swap the cables but keep the maxtor disconnected and works fine
-swap cables with maxtor on, no boot

So I don't think the cables are the problem. What could be wrong? How can I get all my data off the maxtor drive?

I could be wrong on this, but I think the sata ports on that board are hot swappable. If so, boot into your OS with the Maxtor disconnected, and then connect it. That should work, unless your Maxtor has gone south.

connected the drive with windows running. its partitioned into like 4 drives and it only showed one with one file on it instead of all of them. it did show the correct size of the drive and how much was free on that partition though. just didn't really work well. what can i do?

When I got my IBM/Hitachi SATA 80G the first thing I did was go to the Hitachi site and download their drive integrity checking program. It goes on a floppy and kicks off on reboot. I hooked the drive up and let it roll to make sure the drive came with no problems. It was free and I bet you could use that software or maybe Maxtor makes a comparable program to check the drive.

i found one on maxtor site but it won't work cause its sata. i only found an ide one. any help there?
