I have a DFI-NF4 Ultra-D and I used to have just 1 SATA HD, then I plugged in my IDE. Everything works and I don't use raid...not yet atleast. Oh...when you load windows unplug your IDE. My motherboard thought that my ide was C drive and when I installed the OS I got it installed on D. So in order to have your SATA be Drive C, unplug your IDE first. Again this is only with my DFI Ultra-D so yours may be different.

This board doesnt have a native SATA controller, it has an onboard Sil controller, so you will have to install SATA drivers when installing Windows. Sometime, at the beginning of the installation, you will be asked to press F6 to install third party RAID drivers. Even if you wont put a RAID array, you will have to install the drivers that are on the floppy when asked to do so.

nforce3 and 4 have a native controller, and no drivers are necessary to install a SATA drive, unless you want to RAID them. SATA is often mixed with RAID, as RAID became popular with the newer chipset supporting SATA. but RAID is a controller mode that can be useed with ATA, SATA and SCSI drives. SATA is the interface between the IDE drive and controller. nothing more than that. Onboard controller need drivers because they use the PCI bus to connect to the system, and like your sound card, for example, it needs drivers. Controller embedded in the chipset will act like standard IDE controller, because they are just that..IDE controller with a SATA interface instead of a PATA interface.

Like grooge said, you have to install the SATA drivers at the F6 screen, but you don't need your PATA drive plugged in at the same time. You can just use SATA.
