THIS TOPIC WAS POSTED IN GENERAL HARDWARE...HOPING FOR SOME HELP HERE!
Hello everyone. I am hoping someone can help me out with a problem I have been having.
Before I start, here are the specs of my PC:
Windows XP Pro (SP1)
Barton 2500+ (not oc'd at the moment)
512mb Corsair RAM
A7N8X Deluxe Revision 2 MoBo (which is currently in transit for RMA as we speak)
27GB IBM HD
Maxtor 120GB SATA hd (the problem child)
Lite-On cd-rw/dvd combo
Sapphire 9800Pro
Soundblaster Live 5.1 (oooold card)
My problems with the Maxtor HD started last month, actually. I was using it as the OS drive, and the smaller 27GB drive was being used for storage of cd images and such. One day, I decided to use Norton Speedisk to defrag my drive, and the next day, I was unable to boot from the Maxtor drive again (kept receiving an error message"Can not find NTLOADER" or something along those lines). I wasnt even able to reformat or reinstall XP Pro again, so off it went back to NewEgg for replacement.
I got it back near the end of last month, and decided to use the SATA drive as the storage drive, and the IBM drive as the OS drive. Everything was working fine until Monday.
On Monday, I had shut the PC down after having it downloading some stuff via Bittorrents prior to going to work (the pc was on prolly 40 of 48 hours over the weekend). When I get home, I powered up the PC, only to find that I could not get past the Windows startup screen (where the bar slides on the bottom). I tried rebooting normally, in debugging mode, in safe mode, etc. I managed to get to a point where scandisk attempted to check the drive (the SATA drive, that is), and it wouldn't get past 0%, even when I waited for over 30 minutes.
I decided to unplug the SATA drive, and sure enough, I immediately got into Windows! So the HD is definitely the culprit here.
One other thing about this whole thing is the reason for me sending back the MOBO to newegg for replacement. As I was fiddling around in the PC after finally getting the PC running off my 27GB hd, I noticed a burning/really hot metal smell. After about 3 seconds of searching (and crossing my fingers hoping it wasn't my CPU melting on me), I noticed the heatsink for the chipset (believe it was the northbridge) had popped off. One of the spring locks came off, and I still haven't found the sucker. This is the reason for the mobo being sent back, though I do not know if this has anything to do with the sata drive.
So, after writing what feels like a novel here (thanks for taking the time to read this), I am wondering if anyone here would know what it could be that is ruining my SATA hard drive, and also, how to prevent this from happenning in the future.
Any and all advice will be appreciated.
