installed new (RMA'd) WD1600JS drive, my mb detects it since it shows up in BIOS and during POST.
shows up in device manager in windows, but not in Disk Management and obviously not in My Computer.
tried to rescan, scan for hardware changes, but still does not show up in disk mgmt.

i noticed during the first bootup, windows found the new hardware (pop up on the lower right by the clock).

how can i get it to show up so i can create a new volume and format?

motherboard is msi p45, detects my wd6400aaks drive just fine.

You have to format it before Windows will see it. You can use an Windows install disk or a third party app like Partition Magic.

Yeah - any bootable CD that has disk utilities will do it. You can download and create one with UBCD.

If he can't see it in the disk managment console there is an issue. If you can see it in the disk managment console just initilize the disk first, then partision and format it in windows, but if windows doesn't see the disk in the disk managment console I'd suggest putting it on a different SATA port & checking your cables.

That's false. You do not have to format a new drive first for windows to see it. You will not see it in explorer but it will show up in Disk Management. You'll then need to initialize it, partition it if you wish and then format. Once it's formatted you'll see it in Explorer.

Seriously, where does the "windows will not see it" come from?

Hmmm, no reply back from OP yet...

Another possibility is that OP does see the drive in Disk Management, but he is running either Vista Home or Home Premium, and the OS recognizes the drive as Dynamic...so the disk is inaccessible, and he just doesn't realize that the empty row he sees in Disk Management is his new drive.

In this situation, right-click that "empty row" in Disk Management and convert to Basic. Another option is to upgrade Vista to Business, Enterprise or Ultimate; those operating systems will properly access Dynamic drives.

I'm confused. Does the drive show up in Device Manager or not?

running winXP.
there is no empty row. it should be disk 1, underneath my boot drive disk 0 but it's not there.

i tried WD diagnostic tools but nothing there.
could WD have sent me a defective RMA drive?
