Sata HD in a IDE desktop

I've been helping a friend with his computer. He has a HP model PS583AA desktop using a P4 3.04 GHZ, Asus mobo, 512mb DDR2 5300,and XP home SP2. I advised him to go to 2gb ram and a a new HD ( his is starting to make some noise). I want to get him a 1tb SATA HD(so he can put in a new build later), but his computer will only take IDE drives. I called Fry's and they said you can do it, but it takes a adapter and they aren't that reliable. Is this true?

Yeah you can install a PCI SATA adapter, or an adapter directly on the SATA drive. But they haven't built ATA-only computers since 2004 or so. So the computer is very likely close to the end of its life, and its operator should be thinking of replacement.

Agree - a SATA PCI card is a good, cost-effective solution. My old Asus board has two SATA ports - one of which fell apart mechanically. I went the PCI route and have had excellent SATA suuport, including eSATA.
