SATA Harddrive question

Hi.

Right now I'm using an MSI K8T NEO-FIS2R Socket 754 VIA K8T800 ATX AMD motherboard. I have a 74 gigabyte 10k rpm wd raptor hard drive. This is currently the only hard drive in this system.

Now, I want to start ripping DVDs. I currently have a server that has like 2 40 gig drives and a 20 gig drive in it (all IDE hdds). One of the 40's isn't mine so i only have 60 gigs of space, and 30 is already taken up by music. My plan is to add a 300 gig SATA to the desktop and a 300 ide to the server. I'll take out a 40 and the 20 from the server. I want to be able to rip dvds and have everything on slow storage on the desktop and have full backups on the server.

The question: I want to add this 300 gig SATA to the desktop, but am i allowed to? (it's not identical to the raptor) I'm not using a RAID in my plan.

Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. Does anyone have any ideas of how I could make my setup better? Is my plan a bad idea for some reason? Would it be more cost effective to do something else? Thanks.

Well i just ordered the 2 300gb hard drives just something just occured to me -- the server that I'm putting the 300gb sata into might not support drives that large. I have an ECS K7VZA in that machine. I've googled to no end but I can't seem to get a definitive answer on whether the board will support my drive.

Do you guys think that it'll be supported, or am I going to have to get a slightly better mobo/processor for the server?

As a side note, I think that I'll be upgrading the case for the server at least soon, because I have a feeling that with a 300gb, a 20gb, and a 40gig drive in there, in a small case, things are going to get hot Fast. So hopefully I don't have to get a better mobo/processor when I upgrade the case.

Thanks in advance for your help
