SATA Hard Drive w/Win2K

Hi All:

I have a question about using a SATA hard drive as my main boot drive. I am thinking of buying a new SATA drive to replace my old PATA drives. I am using an old version of Win2K as my OS. I do have a separate Service Pack 4 disk that I use once I load Win2K to bring it up to speed and then I download the remaining patches from Windows Update. My questions are:

1. Will I have a problem loading the OS on the SATA drive (i.e., will the Win2K installation disk recognize SATA)? If not, what is the work around for this?

2. As you know, it wasn't until Service Pack 3 (I think) that Win2K would recognize a hrd drive with more than 120 GB of space. I am thinking about buying a 300 GB SATA drive and obviously want to be able to use all of its capacity. If I format the drive (one 300 GB partition) before beginning the clean install of the OS, will Win2K see all 300 GB after I load Service Pack 4? I realize that the initial install will only "see" up to 120 GB.

In case you are asking "Why does he stay with Win2K?", it is because it works for me and I don't like having to validate my software through Microsoft. I know, the day will come when I will have to, but I am going to fight it as long as possible.

Thanks for your help.

I use win2k here aswell 🙂

I've got a SATA RAID array, I did have some problems getting it sorted, but that was more RAID related.

I reckon it'd be worth the small time investment to make a slipstreamed disc with SP4 in. Google for nlite, it's really easy to follow.

I use a SATA drive as the boot drive on my W2k system and it works fine. Just install the Sata drivers into the W2k on your current drive so they'll be ready to go on first bootup after you've cloned the drive over.

..bh.
