SATA Hard Drive question

Yea, so ive got a SATA hard drive. Its got the normal 4pin power connection and the SATA cord connection for power (both running from PSU obviously). Which one do i use, or do i use both? I honestly cant find an answer anywhere, havent look too long though.
 
I upgraded a friend's system recently and used a WD SATA hard drive that had both standard and SATA power connectors on it. Since his PSU didn't have any SATA power connectors (and the drive was OEM, so no adapters), I used the stardard Molex power connector and everything worked fine.

Later, he got a new case and PSU, and I switched the drive to a SATA power connection. Basically, it appears to be either/or, not both at the same time 🙂
 
I would assume both would kill it, but if the drive makers are thinking ahead at all (about consumers, not bucks), they would put a feature to kill extra power going into the item.
