SATA For My System

I have a motherboard (Athlon XP type) that I have an IDE hard drive setup. I am looking to buy another hard drive, and I'm wondering if I should upgrade it to SATA-protocols before doing so.

I don't see any SATA ports, but I am guessing I would buy a SATA card, right? And would it be PCI-based? (One hard drive I'm looking at comes with such a card.) Would I have to do anything to have it "ignore" the IDE ports and have it "recognize" the SATA ports at bootup?

Also, would it provide a big advantage for tasks such as (say) ripping a DVD to the hard drive and then burning it, video editing, that type of thing?

I do know how to build my own machines, am pretty well technically versed, but ignorant of this matter.

It would be PCI based. You may be able to get it to boot from the PCI card but it'll be a pain in the rear.

It would not give any benifit over a PATA drive for ripping/encoding times. The SATA interface doesn't speed up the drive and nearly all manufacturers still sell PATA versions of their current HDs. It will be better for the future as the current motherboards have one IDE channel rather than 2, that and the wiring is nicer.
