sata failure?

hello.
today i accidently powered off my computer while still loading win xp sp1
(i have a s-ata Western Digital 1600jd 160gb)
when i tried to reboot after that i got a blue screen sth about unmounted vilume drive.
Same thing in Safe mode.
i then tried xp's boot cdrom and ran system recovery and than scan disc.

after that, windows stasts, but VERY slowly
it seems like it freezes for about 1 minute every time i boot.
When running chkdsk i get
File segment 40 is unreadable

i am also unable to run defrag after the incident.

any thoughts?
formatting the disc would solve the problem or is a bad sector a permanent damage?
i read that once a new-generation hdd reports a bad sector, it means it's dying and i
should expect a domino-effect, bad sectors one after the other.
is it true?

You dont lose anything reformatting and trying again. Once you get everything set up, double check to make sure the errors are gone.

Which sata port are you using and what kind of mb? I generall use Sata ports 3 &4 without incident on my Nvidia based boards.

i use it on sata2
my mobo is msi's k8n neo2 platinum

is there a more sophisticated disk utility such us "scandisk" that could help me deal with the damage without reformatting?

welcome to AT!

I dont know about the domino effect but your problems sounds easy to fix.....reformat and you should be good
