Just out of curiosity I was looking at what is available nowdays as far as sata expansion cards. Lot of them say "8 channel" but only have like 2 ports, what exactly does this mean? Also some say "multi lane". Does it mean that it uses a special cable to turn that port into multiple?

I also noticed that lot of them are only 300mbps, when Sata is actually 3Gpbs, so unless I'm reading that wrong, are sata controllers a huge performance issue?
