SATA DVD/RW drive

i was just curious. it seems that SATA is the wave of the future or something. i know there are sata hard drives, but are there any sata dvd burners yet?

is it because it is not worth to make them sata? too expensive? i'd consider getting one now and sticking it in my current rig. then in a year to a year and a half when i build by super SFF, i'll be able to stick it in there.

any info on whether there are any or whether there are ever going to be any?

thanks!

thanks ScrapSilicon for the link.

i guess my question is now, when will sata dvdr/w drives become mainstream to the tune about $100? or even $150. year? year and a half?

Remember, for the present, SATA optical drives will only work with some Intel chipset based mobos. There is no native ATAPI support on other SATA controllers until chipsets with SATA II come out. I suppose it might be able to do an OS based SATA-ATAPI driver to make it work. Have to wait and see...

any idea why that would be the case? is it too hard to make optical drives work with sata? i thought sata was an interface for the OS to access the device. as long as the mobo has sata, why would it matter if it were an optical drive or hard drive? how curious!

i cant wait until a64, ddr2, pci-express, and sata (hd and optical) are all crammed into an SFF. then i'll deem it upgrade time =)

I'm still wondering if the Nforce 3 chipset supports optical drivers or not, since besides Intel's new 915/925 chipsets, it has the most "correct" implementation of SATA. Current VIA and SiS chipsets are confirmed NOT to support optical drives.
