SATA drives..........Hitachi vs. Maxtor: Who would you trust?

I'm considering a SATA RAID for my system and have a big question...........who do you trust more for reliability, Maxtor or Hitachi/IBM?

The only reason I ask is that I was one of the many who suffered through the infamous 75GXP IBM drive failure debacle (I RMA'd 4 of those damned drives before ulitmately swearing off IBM.)

But I've been reading good things about the Hitachi SATA drives....speed, performance, etc. But will this end up just like the 75GXP drive.....fast out of the gate but unable to endure more than 4 months? Would the Maxtor DiamondMax 9 lineup be the better/safer choice?

Thanks for your input!!!

Jeff

I recently purchased a 80GB SATA Hitachi from Newegg for a new machine. It has the fluid dynamic bearings and the thing is quiet as hell and plenty fast. Hopefully Hitachi cleaned up the issues with the old IBM product line. We'll see, I guess!

I can't recommend the Maxtor as I don't have any experience with them.

I have two Maxtor DiamondMax 9+'s in my two desktop computers and an Hitachi drive in my laptop. They are both really quiet (the Hitachi has no noise except for seeks, possible because it's so small and slower?). They both haven't broken down on me (but I have had the Maxtor's longer) so I would recommend then both.

Good luck!

I have an older Maxtor in my Desktop which has run very goodfor me the past 2 years. It is faily quite and performs as expected for a 7200 RPM 40 gig drive. I don't know how the newer SATA drives are but from most of the review i've seen of them they are real nice.
I have a hitachi 40 gig 5400 RPM in my laptop and it runs great its a little loud when writing but other than that its good. I have heard good things from both drives lataly I would probably go with the maxtor because it has a 3 year warrenty compared to hitachis one year. If that doesn't matter to you I would then go for price

I've numerous Maxtors myself over the years with only one failure........several WDs and one recent failure. But IBM's history of the old 75GXP really left a bad taste in my mouth. But their warranty is 3 years even for the 80GB SATA while everyone else's is 1 year in that size.

Then again, a warranty is crap when you really have to use it......well....have to order something today.....probably go with the Maxtor and hope I don't have to have a warranty issue in years 2 & 3.

Thanks!!

thats not what he asked, and some people hate WD. Me, now go away.

I think there are very very large efforts at hitachi to prevent the catastrophy of the 60 + 75 GXP series drives. Its foolish to worry about that happening again.

I think its sort of like the firestone tire phenomenon....where right after they got the bad reputation, no one bought their tires anymore. It was also commented by industry experts that as a result of the contraversy....firestone was pumping out some of the best quality tires avalible due to much pressure post-incident.

I liked IBM drives back when they were IBM, and I think they are only getting better under hitachi. maxtor is certainly no bad drive! but I really like the reformance of the new hitachi sata and feel it is just as capable of being a quality drive as the maxtor.

I mainly run Maxtor drives and have had little issues with them.

I can't comment on Hitachi, but I'm personally still a bit wary on using their product.

I recommend Maxtor. I have no problem with Hitachi's reliability (even though I lost 2 60GXPs) BUT their RMA process takes over a month with no possibility to cross-ship. I won't buy another Hitachi drive until they improve that.

I just put a system together yesterday with a Hitachi 160mb sata drive. The drive is inaudible in my case and fast. My nf7s v2 motherboard found the drive and everything installed without problems.
