SATA Drive Question

Will a single SATA drive (like the maxtor) give me 150mb/sec or do I need to involve raid to do this?

My motherboard has native SATA support.

If I want to Raid0 two maxtor SATA's will I more likely get the 150mb/sec thoroughput?

Just to clear up my confusion I wanted to confirm...with Raid0 if you have two 100gig drives your usable capacity equals 200gigs , but you do not have redundancy, but you have better read and write access speeds? Is that right?

I imagine I need a scsi card of some sort to Raid0 two SATA drives? Any recommendations? Thanks

Maximum theoretical throughput is 150mb/s, you won't get exactly that.

I'm not familiar w/your mobo. But you can check in the manual to see if it features SATA RAID. You have the RAID levels correct.

RAID 0 = striping for performance (100GB + 100GB drives = "one" 200GB drive, no redundancy protection)
RAID 1 = mirroring for data security (100GB + 100GB drives = "one" 100GB drive, mirror images of each other; one drive fails, you lose nothing)

If your mobo has SATA raid, you just need another identical SATA HD. If not, you need to buy a SATA RAID card and another HD.

You still won't hit 150mb\s. W/ my sata raid, I tend to hit around 70mb\s.

So how the *^@# do they get away with giving that spec heh
The same way they "get away with" giving ATA100 and ATA133 their specs. Or IEEE 1394 or USB. None of them reach their maximum theoretical speeds. Right now, the real limit is in the speed of the hardware. Current hard drives simply can not push that much data down the SATA 150 (or ATA100 or ATA133) pipes. Relax. It'll only get better whan the next iteration of SATA is out, SATA 300, and then SATA600. Until hard drives get faster, the bus speeds won't mean much, other than the theoretical speeds they can offer.

A couple of those WD Raptors coming out soon in a RAID 0 would get a lot closer to the max wouldnt they?
