i have an amd 3200+ (CPU), MSI K8TNEO (motherboard), an old 9600 PRO (GPU), Windows XP Pro (OS). All in a Lian Li Case.

There are 2 drives i would like to currently use on this comp (both SATA)

1 drive is 40 GB and the other is 160 GB.

As of right now only one works (the 40 GB) and it works just fine.

On the other hand the 160 GB SATA drive will just not work. I have tried many things and the comp will just not recognize it. There are four ports on my K8TNEO board. They are labled SER1, SER2, SATA1, and SATA2. I believe all wires are connected properly. Also, the 160 GB SATA HDD (ie the one that doesnt work) makes a clicking noise when the comp is turned on.

Any ideas? Any thoughts on what the problem is?

It could be a few things... here's some off the top of my head:

If you do not have SP1 or 2 in XP then there is a 137 gig limit that the HD is facing so it may not be seen.
Do you have the latest BIOS for the Mobo and SATA non Raid enabled?
Make sure the Jumpers are set correctly on the 160 gigger
Clicking is not good for the HD and it possibly may need replaced

1)There were no jumpers that came with this drive and i was under the impression that SATA drives didnt need jumpers.
2)I may need to update the BIOS cuz it does give me the BIOS not installed message when i start it up. But then again, i can access the BIOS just fine.
3)I called the manufacturer and have all the steps to send it back. The clicking noise leads me to believe it is really messed up.

4)Even with the updated BIOS wouldn't the drive still be seen by the system? Seeing that i have another smaller SATA drive that worked great right out of the box.

Forgot about no the jumpers on SATA drives...my mistake. if you have no BIOS date posted then it would be wise to put in the latest official one, however, if you do not have SP1 installed with XP, then it would recognize any drive below the 137Gig barrier but not incorrectly or not at all on HD's larger. SP1 and above corrected that with XP...A BIOS with problems can cause all sorts of mishaps but I do agree, that the clicking sound coming from the HD would call for an RMA as that in itself is 1 tome bomb waiting to explode.
