SATA Drive BATTLE! You decide....

OK... Heres the choice.

2 x WD SATA 10K RPM 36 gig drives that are out CURRENTLY + SATA RAID card in RAID 0

vs

1 x WD SATA 10K ROM 72 GIG drive coming out later on.....

Neither, since WD charges way too much for them as it is. 😛 For that price, the capacity should be much larger.

Well I thought the same thing recently and went for the 2 x 36 gig Raptors in RAID 0. Mainly because the 73 gig Raptor was not out and I couldn't be bothered to wait. Of course with either setup you get the same storage capacity so it's a question of speed and Db levels I think. The 2 Raptors I have running do not seem that loud if I'm honest.

If I wasn't so impatient I would have gone for 2 x 72 gig Raptors in RAID 0. 🙂

Whats that? I would go for 2x36 as you could put your operating system and installed programs on one. Then all your important files on the other.

First, good question, I wish I knew the answer as well.
Second, with RAID0 your OS sees the drives as 1 drive so it's not like having a C: and D:
Third, if you wanted to partition the drives into c: d: e: f: or whatever, you could do it just as easily with two drives as with one in a RAID array.

get neither and just get a SATA150 Seagate drive for half the money and get double the storage at about the same speed...or even get 2 and put em into RAID0...they are DEAD silent compared to Raptors and almost equiv in speed at RAIDing

I'll be interested to see if the 72GB model's command queueing works with current SATA controllers or not. If it does, that's not a bad buy for a drive that would rival a 10k SCSI drive (assuming command queueing works), plus offer fluid bearings and an equivalent warranty.

I paid $200 for an 18GB 15000rpm drive (twice), so 72GB for $200 is not that bad. If it lives up to its billing, I may get one to supplement my 15000rpm srives.

I think i'm gonna KISS and do 1 72 gig raptor as my OS drive.. I dont really need the x-tra power that RAID 0 + 2 36gigs can offer

a: It depends on your priorities. For raw speed, the 2 36G Raptors in RAID0 would be faster than a single 72G. Of course, the single 72G would be quieter due to the basic idea of 1 being quieter than 2. The other thing to keep in mind is that with R0 you will experience a higher failure rate. (1 corruption on 1 drive = entire array corrupt), I think the equivalence is 1/2 of the MTBF. (if 1 fails in 4 years, 2 in R0 would fail in 2). Just a post decision answer for ya...

I'm thinkin I'll either get a 72gig raptor, or just a regular sata seagate for the quietness. these raided WD800JBs are loud.

You think a 10K WD drive is going to be quieter than your 7200 RPM WD's?

For the money, I'd get a 160GB or 200GB SATA drive over a Raptor or two...
