Last night, I opened a new Koutech PSA-150 (Silicon Image 3112) SATA Controller Card, installed it in my PC, and connected two SATA drives to it. Upon realizing that didn't do anything (including let the system boot), I disconnected both drives, flashed the controller BIOS to the latest rev, verified that the motherboard BIOS was running at the latest rev, and reconnected everything... this time it worked. I unplugged drive 0, so only drive 1 remained connected. I installed Windows XP Pro on drive 1, partition 1 (though it is recognized by windows as drive 0, as drive 0 is disconnected).
So... I'm restoring data to this hard drive from an external USB hard drive. I'm also listening to music in WinAmp at the same time... and browsing the internet using Firefox. Nothing particularly strenuous. The system "froze up" for about 10 seconds... being that the keyboard and mouse stopped responding, the sound I was hearing was the last note from the song being repeated endlessly, appeared that windows decided to halt. Just as I was reaching for the reset button, the system came back to life, everything was peachy.
So, I call it a fluke. Almost exactly an hour later, it does the same thing. Hrmmmm..... I'm transferring things, and am on the phone, so I don't bother with investigating it. Again, almost an hour later, the same thing happens. This time, I open event log viewer... System error #9 (The device, \Device\Scsi\si31121, did not respond within the timeout period.) was occuring when the system froze up, and then ton of system error #51(An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.)s were reported.
The SATA drive I'm using came out of a machine that's life was cut unexpectedly short due to a PSU fire... but after testing the drives (SATA Hard Drives + PATA Optical) in more than one machine, they all still seem to be operating properly.
The data restoration from the USB external hard drive to the internal SATA drive seems to be taking FOREVER. I know that it did not take me NEARLY this long to back the data up to this USB hard drive from this SATA drive, when they were attached to a different machine. Yes, the USB speed is the same... both are not USB 2. It feels like it should be going a LOT faster than it is. Like... before, I couldn't read the names of MP3s in the file transfer window, because they were transferring so quickly... now I could probably read and TYPE the name of each MP3 as it is transferred, because it's taking so long.
At the moment, I believe that the SATA controller is probably a piece of crap (it was extremely cheap... like $17 or something). The two event log message #s indicate that there's a drive write failure - this, the problem must be with either the controller, hard drive, or cable connecting them, correct? As the hard drive and cable have worked in other machines... I'm around 99.5% certain it's the controller that's being a PITA.
Does anyone have any experience with SATA Controllers (in particular, the Silicon Image 3112), or these event log errors? At this point, it would just be nice for someone to confirm or deny my suspicion that the Controller is most likely faulty. I'm tired, so my logic may be flawed.
Thanks 😉
