SATA and SATA2 quick question

Well im looking at buying a sata2 hard disk only for increased space. Presently im only running an 80gig sata1 drive (WD) on a motherboard that isnt comapatible with sata2 but from what i read sata2 drives are backwards compatible. the reason im buying an sata2 drive is because it's on sale and cheaper than any of the sata1 drives so i figure il be saving a few bucks. thus, sata2 speed doesnt matter to me because i know i will lose the sata2 added speed but i am only wondering if i will encounter any problems? and also whether i can run raid with my current drive? thanks.
