SATA and IDE

Then there is nothing else that will differentiate them for you. SATA is a better protocol in a lot of ways, but it doesn't perform any differently at current drive speeds.

IDE: big fat wires, 133MBper second transfer rate maxium
SATA: Samll round wires, connectors, 150MB per second max transfer rate
SATA2: Same as SATA except 300MB per second max transfer rate.

of course, this is all fud since a normal 7200rpm drive will only have maybe 50-60MB per second sustained transfer rates and 90-100MBper second peak burst transfer rates.

As morph says, but add to the fact that SATA2 hasn't got a solid definition.
Sata 2.5, however has, but, at the moment you won't notice any difference.

If you want speed - SCSI is fastest, noisiest, longest lasting.
If you want absolute less hassle, stick with IDE for now. - A lot less problem when tshooting, and, should the system go tits up, unless you have sata-IDE adaptors, they arent as 'universal'.

Hmmm. This is a good thread. I was just looking at HDDs' and wondering if it was worth it to go to SATA or SATA2 from IDE. Now I imagine if I go with a SATA RAID setup, then I'll notice a performance boost. But otherwise I won't, correct?

Sata to sata 2 is probably better than going form ide to sata. If a ide is cheaper, get the IDE and wait for sata 2 to ebcome more popular. my 2C's
