SATA and IDE questions

I have XP installed on an ATA/100 IDE drive. That will stay the same.

I also have a second IDE hard drive I use for photos and video editing. I'm looking to replace this drive with a SATA drive. My motherboard supports it.

My question is, are there any conflicts or problems with using an IDE drive and a SATA drive? Newegg has some sweet deals on SATA drives, and it's actually cheaper to get a 300gb SATA than a 300gb ATA/100 300gb drive (my board doesn't support ATA/133).

you shouldnt use ide its slower than sata and for windows if you want the best performance use your sata. about the only think ide has going is that it boots faster since it doesnt have to load a driver.

Hard drive performance is currently limited by the drive's themselves, not the IDE or SATA interface.

Using the two together should be perfectly fine.

Thanks. I'm not looking to reinstall windows.

So I want to keep my OS on the IDE drive and connect a second SATA drive for photo and video storage.

My quesiton is about whether or not there are any problems doing this before I go out and buy a SATA drive.

1. It will work fine. You're adding, not replacing.
2. ATA 133 is still basically a gimmick by Maxtor. An ATA 100 is the fastest 'real' standard for PATA.
