SATA and IDE on teh same board

Its been about 3 years, and I'm looking to upgrade again. This new interface (SATA 3gb) is supported on the board as well as PATA (2xATA100).

question is, if I buy SATA 3g drives, can I effectively have 8 drives in my system, if i take my current IDE drives and drop em in also?

Depends on the motherboard you go with... the 3 SATA drives are no problem, and in most cases adding two PATA HD's will work fine too, the biggest issue you may run into with new mb's is that most only have one IDE port & thus you'll need to get SATA optical drives, which cost a bit more.
I've also read about a few people using NForce 5 boards with IDE & SATA hd's being forced to install their OS on the IDE's because for whatever reason, the system simply wouldn't boot from the SATA drives with PATA drives installed.

SATA Optical drive ... lack there of.

I would assume you can buy a SATA-PATA convertor and use a PATA drive hanging off SATA host/channel. Cost vs SATA Optical ? at least you would have greater choice in drives.

Thats another option, although I've never tried it... heres a native SATA Plexstor DVDRW drive for $105.. (ouch!).. I've seen Lite-On models in the $75 range that should work just about as well, but they seem to be out of stock.
