SATA and DVD

Just curious if SATA DVD drives make much of a difference performance wise over IDE, and I am a big fan of Plextor. I am looking to buy a DVD CD combo for games movies etc, so some options on what to buy will be helpfull. It doesnt have to be Plextor but like i said I think they are very good.

Nope. the sATA is through a bridge. I have the 712SA - awesome drive by itself nevertheless, and sATA cable management is a plus.

The only scenario I can see where a SATA DVD would be benificial is if all your IDE ports are used and you only have SATA available. Otherwise it's a waste considering it uses a bridged connection.

I love my 712SA, too, but it doesn't seem all that much better than the other DVD-RW drives around here, sans the better cable management. It's nice to impress your friends, but a hundred bucks more is probably unnecessary.

There are apparently bridges you can buy for $15 that will convert from PATA to SATA, so that may also be an option if you have a large case.

As those guys said, no performance difference. Even if there wasn't a bridge, the limitation of an optical drive is it's speed (rpm), not its interface. And the reason you cant get faster rpm drives (52x is the max for consumer level gear) is that they have a tendancy to throw discs through the front face plate, destroying the drive in the process. I've seen a drive destroyed by this - it's insane.
