EDIT: Now no promo code needed for the deal. I guess Newsletter subscribers just got first choice at these things.

I have received mine and the manufacturing date was April 2006, so these look to be old stock that they're getting rid of.

Good until 8/23/07

Yes, the slower/older SATA but still a HOT deal IMO. I don't think real world performance would matter much. Heck, the Raptor drives are still SATA 150.

Does the coupon work on anything else? These HDs seem to have a semi-high failure rate.

I was considering one of these Samsung Drives

The Samsung 400GB also has a promo code to bring it down to $79.99

hmm.. samsung might be worth extra $10 for its quietness then.

I noticed it only has a month long warranty though =/ - So I'm thinking about going with the 500GB Seagate from Zipzoomfly for $125, 5 year warranty, not OEM. Hard to choose between all these low priced drives, a lot of them have reviews that are concerning, lots of DOA drives and drives that die within a year. I don't know what I'll get. Glad there's no rebates to deal with though.

Do you have any data to back up this claim: "These HDs seem to have a semi-high failure rate." What is the actual failure rate for this particular drive?

Hopefully failure rate is pretty low cause I just bought one 😛 - According to the reviews at newegg some people had theirs come DOA or die on them within a year or so. That sounds like WD to me. Hopefully mine lasts longer than a year. This is the best price to gigabyte ratio out there (17.5 cents per gig or something like that) and it has a 3 year warranty incase there's any probs. It would really suck to lose 200+GB worth of files, so if they are about to die, I hope they show signs of it before hand to give me time to backup important things.

yeah.. makes me kinda wonder if there is a reason why this is cheap. maybe i am just becoming too paranoid 😱

Buy two and clone your drive every week or so using Acronis True Image Server.:light:

I wouldn't buy Caviars from WD ever. I've owned several and they have all died. If you do, make sure they are cooled well. They are fine performance wise.

I've owned several WD's, a couple of Seagates & Maxtors as well.
Maxtor's the only one i've had problems with, but that was before they were taken over by Seagate.
Even though I never had good luck w/Maxtor drives (either DOA or died within a month), their customer service was top-notch. They took my cc info & shipped a replacement priority along w/a prepaid shipping label so I could send the dead one back in the same box.

I've heard people slam WD Cav's time and time again for dying but I can say that I have systems with WD Cav's that are still running after 4-7 years of use. The only HDD I ever had die on me was a Quantum Fireball 😛 This deal is damned tempting, but I'm wondering if it's time for my WD luck to run out.

The problem is all HDD's have some failure issues. I have a 9 year old WD 400BB (40 GB) and it is STILL working though it is the noisest drive ever. I bought a brand new Seagate 7200.10 500GB SATA that failed after one month... do I trust either brand more? No... simply because the HDD is the worst part of any computer when it comes to reliability due to all the moving parts.

I may buy on of these and look for a cheap enclosure as I need a new external. this is just big enough for all my files, music, and pics 🙂

yah some of you need to get over your personal grudges. I had some serious issues with samsungs twice in a row and was very unhappy about their customer support. Even then I was well aware that was just my luck and I continue to recommend samsungs to my friends.

Errr...why would you recommend them after all the problems you have had and when you don't like their customer support? 😕

You must not like your friends 😛

I knew this was coming 😛
Well, I bought a spinpoint 80 series drive in Korea, samsung's newest gem getting all the rave reviews back then. Prior to this model, they were known for crappy drives compensated by bulletproof warranty. My unit seemed to work fine for about 3 weeks or so of extremely light use, and then suddenly crapped out without any warning signs. When I took that POS to a local service center, folks there gave me a suspicious looking OEM drive with more than neglible differences on the label. Then all the hell broke loose: the new drive rattle like HELL, not even the strongest force feedback controller comes remotely closely to matching that. I chose to ignore it hoping that all that rattling would go away in a timely manner. On the contrary, it got worse and worse and my whole arm felt numb just from typing :Q Of course I went right back to the service depot and those bastards were reluctant to replace it for me after some cursory testing, claiming the drive functions ok with minor rattling and the replacement drive takes time to ship from the factory :| That completely shattered my impression that Samsung was a company that survived thanks to their aggressive marketting and excellent customer support (not to be confused with their ram and display products, I am talking about general electric/electronic appliances distributed for domestic consumption). Less than favorable stance I had had on the company as the whole didnt help any either, and I posted some furious rant on their website only to be ignored :|

However, knowing full well that my experience only pertains a signle, isolated customer support branch, and the fact that the drive was overwhelmingly well received in general, I continued to recommend Spinpoint 80. Needless to say, the CS department in the US would have little if anything to do with the craptastic experience I had to put up with, so that doesnt stop me from preaching people to get Samsung for quietness.

Face it, with all HD prices taking a nose dive, they *ALL* are going to take shorcuts and use the least expensive parts.
Seagate, Hitachi, Samsung, Maxtor(Seagate), & WD. They are ALL doing it.
With these big HDs, you pretty much have to buy 2 at a time so you can back it up.

Heat doesn't seem to be a big issue, they fail in hot & cold rooms. SMART only works under 20% of the drive failures. So usually, the HD just dies, and you don't get ANY notice of any SMART failure codes.

This is a nice deal, just buy 2 😀isgust;
