Substitute "SARS"/"pneumonia" for swine flu, and this thread could be from last month.
SARS is a bug that's not as virulent as influenza is. Plus, the media sensationalism of SARS, plus China's seriously hardcore efforts, effectively neutered the bug making it tough to grab a strong hold on humans.
When it infected someone is was nasty, but it didn't spread nearly as easily as influenza.
However, sensationalism is sensationalism. I however don't necessarily view sensationalism as evil, it can be somewhat effective in helping slow down the spread of infection of any pathogen.
