From what I have seen parts of Alaska are beautiful. But can you base a season of TV episodes on this?

There were 2 million panicky democrats which tuned into the show's premire to see what they had to worry about. AGAIN

The boogey lady is out there, must check out the situation.

Nah - more like a train wreck; you can't help but watch.

Great-I'm now Palin's target audience and I can't even make it halfway through the commercials for that show before I click away. My early New Years Resolution:

-turn the channel immediately when the talking heads start jabbering about Lindsey Lohan, Britany Spears, Paris Hilton or Sarah Palin. I'll make an exception if any of them actually run for President.

The short portions that I have seen have the Palins doing things like climbing glaciers and going out on a fishing boat to catch halibut and then helping out on a processing line.

It is not just a show of scenery, though that is certainly a part of it, it is an interesting introduction to the people and the lifestyles of Alaskans.

I guess it is in the same vein as "Ice Road Truckers" and "Dirtiest Jobs In The World" in that the characters are not actors and they do things of some vicarious interest. I found it interesting because the show does not prettify the experience - Palin is scared of heights and struggles to climb a rock face, her daughter Bristol is squeamish about hitting halibut on the head with a billy club to stun them and refuses to do so (though they do cut away from actually showing her mom hit a halibut on the head several times to put it down. TMI for entertainment purposes!) I guess this kind of "real life" portrayal is what makes it a "reality" show rather than a travelogue.

The initial episodes were about the rugged outdoors, Denali and commercial fishing, but Alaska also has a fun bar, food and music scene which I hope they cover in a future episode.

The camera work in the show is striking, fully HD and National Geographic quality, so if you like to watch NatGeo and Discovery shows you won't be disappointed by this one.

< Laughs at the supposition that ratings are Up or Down because of Politics, rather than simply because the show stinks. >
