I just noticed that Newegg has the Retail version of the GTO^2 in stock for $250. Is it worth this price? Actually, it would be closer to $265 or so after shipping.

I know that there are other places, such as Atacom, right now that has it for $230, BUT, shipping, since I live in Alaska kills it for me. Atacom charges $45 for shipping while Newegg charges $15-20; plus I can add a few other things that I need and the shipping only goes up one or two dollars.

SO...is it worth this price? Or is it better to look at something else?

OK.

So if one can't find it at that price, but, can find an X800 XL for ~ $200 would that be a better deal?

Sorry, I'm just looking for the best bang for my buck...and something that will last me a year or two.

Got it...that's out then. :)

What is the best "bang for the buck" card right now? Regardless of price?

No not at all. Buy 7800GT from EVGA $290AR & Cardpool rebates. Which is worth every penny and overclock like hell like mine and beat 7800GTX in 3dmark05 at 530/1200.

That's actually one thing that I probably won't be able to do...my case doesn't really have the best cooling.... :)

x800xt's can be found used/refurbished for under $250, and that's basically what you're hoping to unlock to with a gto2. I think chiefvalue.com's refurb sections has a few of these in stock right now.

And if you can get a 7800gt for $290, that would be much better :)

Could you explain how the "Cardpool" works? I would have to find someone with an EVGA 7800GT? And then we would both be eligibile for $100 in rebates?

mmm care to backup your facts ? a card that unlocks and overclocks to x850xt pe speeds for 260 bux, vs spending $360 for the cheapest xt pe @ newegg. at 199 it was a no brainer, id say its still a damn good deal @ 250.

"Def not worth it" is probably a bit strong, but with the possibility of getting a 7800GT for $290 with a lifetime warrantee, $260 for a card you have to unlock to get less performance out of seems less attractive.

I bit on the GTO2 at $208 shipped but given the falling 7800GT prices I wouldn't advise spending over $230 or so. Plus, with the 7800, you get VIVO.

Not worth the risk...

There have been a few reports of the unlocking being not successful.. so you can throw that 100% success rate out of the water... I believe that was just hooplaa... kinda of like the supposedly high success rate of the 9800SE > 9800 Pro flash... ( I ended up with two that didn't work).. but the hardware world kept pushing the over 50% success rate..(which in my case, didn't hold true).

You take the chance if you want to... you could just get the higher clocked 850 Pro for $239 or spring for a few more $ to get the 16 piped 800XL..... or spend less than $190 for the fast, 12 pipe regular GTO version.....

I haven't seen any reports on this forum for the flash NOT working. These cards are hitting PE speeds!!!

Look at the other threads. Is it worth 250? I think so. But I don't want to pay anything above that.

I haven't seen any reports of it not working either. If it didn't work, send the card back. I believe the card is still the best bang for the buck, you are paying $250 for a $450 card. Look at the benchies for the X850XT and you'll see what you are getting. No other card comes close to that performace for $250.

I got an X800GTO2 with a ATI Silencer for about $250 all-in, and have it clocked to about 540/594 stable (i.e. X850XT PE level). However I'm starting to wonder if it was really such a good deal. I don't think it's necessarily right to say I saved $150 over the price of an X850XT PE since a) an X850XT PE would overclock further beyond its stock speed, and b) the X850XT PE has VIVO, which the X800GTO2 does not.

BTW I consider replacing the stock fan a must. These cards generate a lot of heat and to have that pumped into the case (as opposed to out thru the back) is not a good idea... especially if you are also overclocking your cpu.

As another poster suggested, the big issue isn't the comparisson to the irrationally inflated price of the x800xt-pe (are people really buying these in PCI-E for these prices?) but rather the 7800 GT which can be had for as low as $330 without rebates (Chaintech). I agree with the other posters--for $200-210 it's a good deal, but the value of the deal starts to become iffy once the price increases above that.

For that matter, I don't understand why the PCI-E versions of the 6800 GT's aren't going for $200 and why the 6800 Ultras aren't going for $250-275. Either there are people out there who don't do their research before making significant purchases or a bunch of retailers are going to be stuck with increasingly outdated 6800s and decreasingly valuable 6800s that no one wants to buy at hyper-inflated prices. Apparently they'd rather let them rot than sell them to people at reasonable prices.
