Power supply. The x850xt probably takes twice as much power as the 6600GT, at least.

NewEgg had a pretty good deal on the enermax 485 last week, that is a place to start looking. I have never heard of Omega (doesn't rule it out right away, but x850xt + PD == mucho power consumption)

Linkage

Good luck :)

BTW, I love my x850xt. I actually downsized from a 7800GT :p Got $150 out of the deal too, which was easily worth it.

Ya, I upgraded from a 6800nu to the x850xt....very similar to you. One of the first things I noticed was how well Farcry ran. Most definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

you DID remove every trace of nvidia drivers [with Driver Cleaner] BEFORE installing your x850xt? right?

How do I know if my PSU is adequate? How do I check the amperage on the 12V rails?
Shouldn't a 525W PSU be able to do the job?

Yes I did. In fact, I did a clean install of Windows XP Pro SP2.

So I'm totally at a loss now as to what could really be the problem.

Just a note...
I used SiSoftware Sandra Lite 2007 for the following results.

CPU Core Power = 54W
CPU Cooling System Thermal Resistance = 0.11*C/W (i really don't know what this means)

CPU Temperature = 47*C
CPU Voltage = 1.15V

My PSU is definately the problem.

Whenever my comp is under any kind of load it crashes because...
12V 1 = 14A
12V 2 = 15A

525W PSU (came with the case) but its lame....gotta change that.

Any suggestions?

You got a power cord connected to the card, right?

I had no problems with power supply I was using.....I think it was less than yours.

Cheex, definitely get a new PSU. Most PSU that comes with cases are complete crap if you're running decent hardware. Labels on them are bogus. Spend a good change for a good PSU.

As start try visiting here: http://www.jonnyguru.com/

I, again, did my research...and have come up with a good PSU i think.
I like the silver one better than the black (its cheaper too).

Tell me what you think.

What temperature is the maximum that this card should be subjected to?
While playing games for a little while the temperature gets into the 70's....72 i saw it at?
While using ATI Tool to scan for artifacts...as high as 100*C.
I want to know if i'm gonna need a cooler for it or if the stock HSF works okay enough?

Sounds high to me, with my X800GTO with 16 pipes oc'd to 850xt speeds the max I saw was about 85C, and that had an inferior cooler to the 850xt I believe. Check your fan speeds in ATITool make sure they're at max or as high as you can stand.

I'd stay away from Rosewill if I were you. Go with a more trusted brand like Seasonic, Enermax, Hiper, PC P&C.

I'm using an Enermax Liberty 620w its overkill for my system, but I like overkill.

For 80ish dollars I'd recommend a PSU like this one: ENERMAX Whisper II 535W

Although if you can afford it I'd go for this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817194003

Also wattages aren't everything. Don't let the numbers fool you.

I hope your right about the wattages as I got a 450W Fortran for my new setup coming in tomorrow, Wed. 9/13. Before I go setting up the whole thing, do you think a Fortran 450W will be able to run a e6300 on a giga DS3 board, x850xt, 2gigs of memory, 1 sata HD, 2 optical drives? I haven't bought a new comp in a few years and didn't realize how much power the new technology might be using. Appreciate any feed back.

Cheex - I can't answer the question about Far Cry but I can give you my overclocking/temps experiences with my Sapphire x850xt.

The maximum I've been able to push core is around 560 using the automatic routine in ATI Tray Tools. The official Catalyst Control Center gave me a max of 567 the first time I ran it, but it backed off to 560 on subsequent occasions. In both places the RAM maxed out at around 603 (1206 efffective). These are okay overclocks but nothing terribly amazing. I am amazed that someone has gotten to 600 on the core (even if it is a PE card).

The default fan settings on the Sapphire card are really awful. It's set to have the fan run at something like 10% up until you hit 80c. The first thing I do is install ATI Tray Tools to alter this. You can match temperatures to fan speed in stages: e.g. at 30c the fan runs at 15%; at 40c the fan runs at 30%, at 50c the fan runs at 45%, etc.

One of the reasons they send the cards out like this is that the stock cooler can get really quite loud at 50% fan speed and above.

As a side note, Oblivion is really touchy with overclocked GPUs. At 560/1200, I do get occasional artifacts, anomalies, etc., when playing the game. I've had better luck at 547/1200, but your mileage may vary.

It's a good card in general and a great card for $120.

My friend has a sapphire Radeon X850XT at stock, with the same specs as my computer, and is able to run F.E.A.R. at 1024x768 with 4X FSAA, 16x Aniso, and everything maxed out except soft shadows, pretty much identical to mine, he has a CRT, so pushing to higher resolutions will make his CRT to run at 60Hz, quite annoying. Quite strange but for some reason his system scores about 5fps below mines, I heard that my card has more tight memory timings, that's why my card is an horrible overclocker, barely reaches 1180MHz on the Memory, and the core is even worse, no more than 527MHz, that's why ATi did a newer revision to that silicon and subtrates in the core, to improve signaling and increase frequency, there is where the R480 came from. Overall is a great card.

This was a rather vague question...my bad.

If anyone wants to share their experiences with this card though feel free to do so here.
Also, if you want to post specific benchmarks, also fine by me.

All I can say is that I am glad that I upgraded my 6600GT....:);):beer::thumbsup::cookie:

I get an error saying that the VPU Recover had to reset because the drivers stopped responding. I get that error when i overclock to PE speed.

For those of you who actually have this card or have actually seen it run:

What are the frame rates like in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion?
Please include the rest of the computer's configuration if you can.

Did you get a PSU, yet? If it's not too late, I've been running with a 550W Rosewill and my comp hasn't skipped a beat. In fact, I've been picking up quite a few things like card readers, case fans, etc that are all Rosewill and I've gotta be honest..... most of them have been as good or better than the more expensive stuff (Lexar, Antec, etc.).

Yes i got my PSU. Its the top-o-tha-line Rosewill. The 600W Stallion. 22A on each rail. SWEET.

No crashes or anything. Even when under HEAVY loads.

:thumbsup::thumbsup: for Rosewill.

Any input about the Oblivion question anyone?
