Its not. Even Anandtech's bench has the testbed w/ 280X pulling 340ish watts max with a 140w cpu.

yeah thats total bs..you dont need no 750w PSU. I have 2 XFX r9 280x's running in Xfire with a 650w PSU and I have never had a single problem as of yet.

I used PSU calculator, it said 552 watts, that too after adding a bunch of other stuff

As for its comparison with GTX 960, the R9 280X has an edge over the 960 theoretically. But power consumption of 960 is less than 280X. But practically when I tried both the cards I found them almost similar. But I would prefer the R9 280X.
