Sapphire 9500 to 9700 mod power question

I recently bought one of the Sapphire 9500 cards in hopes of modding it to a 9700. As usual, luck was not on my side and I get the checker board patterns with the mod. My question is my power supply is not the best (one of those cheap Turbolink 420W according the AnandTech recent power supply review), does anyone think if I upgraded my power supply the mod might work. Overall my system is stable, so I don't think I have any power issues. However, if I thought the 9700 mod would work with a better power supply, I would give it a try.

I doubt a new power supply would help. You might think of changing your power supply anyways though if it's a light weight generic one, just cause you wouldn't want that thing to blow and damage the rest of your system.
