Sapphire 7870 lower FPS than EVGA 460GTX in DiRT3???

Hi Guys!
Ive just upgraded my graphics card from a EVGA 460GTX SC to a Sapphire 7870 Ghz edition . I used FRAPS to benchmark my two cards in a few different games.

(all settings on highest possible)
In DiRT3 I averaged:
134 fps with 460GTX
and
100 fps with 7870
(Most other games showed a good improvement over the 460GTX)

Doesn't make sense to me!! I mean in anandtech bench's the 460 is smashed by the 7870!!

Is this possibly because DiRT3 in not optimized for the new 78XX series?? :hmm:

My rig:
M.B: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H
CPU: Intel Ivy Bridge 3570k @ 4.6ghz
GFX card: Sapphire HD 7870 Ghz Edition
RAM: Corsair Dominator 8gb (2x4gb)
HD Samsung F3 1TB
Monitor: Acer 32" 720p HD @ 1360x768

Check this,7870 is averaging ~168 Fps in 1680*1050

What settings u are using in Dirt3?

here are the settings i use in dirt3:
screen res: 1360x768 (low I know)
multisampling: 8xMSAA
vsync: off
(all detail are set on as high as possible)

I do get this error message every time I boot to windows

"Kdbsync.exe has stopped working"
I can check online for a solution (pointless i know)
or
Close the program

I know this has something to do with ati graphics drivers?

Update: Fixed issue of "Kdbsync.exe" removed all ati drivers.etc re-downloaded software and installed.

Still experiencing lower than expected performance 🙁

"Kdbsync.exe" has to do with Accelerated Video Transcoding for AMD cards.U can check this for more info

Uninstall ur drivers once more and use driver sweeper to remove all traces of amd drivers. Now reinstall the drivers and report back.Check this thread as well

will try that and report back, (p.s im almost ready to go to sleep now, will report back in the morning) thanks very much for your help! hope we can figure this out!!

Honestly, when you are getting these FPS, I wouldn't worry nor rely on them. Use Crysis 1, Crysis 2, BF3, Alan Wake, 3D Mark 2011 etc. If all are fine, then you are good to go 🙂

When you have framerate in the 100+ range, does it really matter?

If you have that much of a discrepancy though, it's nice to know why. It could be hurting performance elsewhere.

The "Kdbsync.exe" issue could be caused from a borked driver install. You might try reinstalling the drivers.

Run a few other benchies, which are real benchmarks, like Crysis games, metro, gta iv, 3d mark etc. If each of them is fine, then it is just Dirt 3/the game

That probably isn't MSAA, just FXAA. With 1440p MAX and 4x MSAA, I get around 80 FPS or so with 2600k OC plus 7970 OC. So what he gets is probably normal with MSAA. You are probably just considering FXAA.

Acc to this you should just get 93 FPS with 7870

That isn't the same resolution.

I'd investigate it too if I were him, I hate it when my Rig doesn't perform to my expectations.

EDIT: After reading Giant's other thread, is it possible he shoudl try using the beta/launch driver? Maybe AMD did break something with newer drivers and they just haven't fixed it.

I'm still using like 12.2 or something myself.

You are literally running like 3.5x the pixels he is.

He's gaming at 1366x768.

Going from 16x10 to 19x12 just increases performance by about 10% or so. Although the difference in pixels is a good 25-35% or so, but performance difference is just 10-12%.

Similarly going all the way up to 1600p doesn't make the FPS half in this game with modern CPUs, probably a hit of 20-40% or so, but still quite a bit more than half, more like 2/3rd or even 3/4th.

And he is using 8x MSAA, that is like 19x12 with 4x MSAA or btw 16x10 and 19x12 with 4x MSAA.

So his performance is about right IMO.

Wow thanks for all your support guys! Ok so I downloaded Driver Sweeper, uninstalled ati drivers, run driver sweeper, (it did find some old nvidia drivers) removed all ati & nvidia software. rebooted and reinstalled ati drivers.
Im now getting the kdbsync error again yay!!
I think I will try reinstalling windows again?? If that fails then what do i do?????????

Go start->run,type msconfig.go to the startup tab and disable the kdbsync from launching at windows startup. That should fix it.U can also try to install the opencl package from amd site.

So I reinstalled windows. only installed essential drivers and programs. run dirt3 and nothing has changed:| the kdbsync error has stopped though:awe: ive now OC'd my 7870 (on Stock volts) rock solid stable at 1200mhz core & 1365mhz memory. It made my 3dmark 11 score alot higher 😉 I guess dirt3 just doesn't perform that well on my rig??

1366x768? Why would you buy a 7870 for that resolution?

simply put because I CAN😉 And besides that I plan to upgrade the monitor very shortly.

Leave dirt3 to dirt for the time being 😛
