Hey,

I decided to keep the default installed heat sinks, and just replace the coolers with bigger and more silent ones.

I've bought 2x Nocutua NF-B9 (92mm). Result is as follows...dont bother how I've mounted them :D.

Result is pretty good. Stock both cores around 45 degrees, under full load 77 degrees...and most important, the noise is gone! :p

Too bad, I was going to recommend replacing with a good cpu cooling fan. Like say Vantec Tornado:evil:

fans? noise? whats that?

http://i125.photobucket.com/al...aigomorla/IMG_0008.jpg

:p

serious note... i dont think you really want to turn your fans down. These gpu's get hot (well my 2xHD4870X2's get hot and required a h2o block to keep them really in check),

and when you load them, unless you like artifacts, i dont recomend turning down the fan too low and all the time.

Another note, awesome mod with the twin fans!

I took a HD4850X2 2GB home with me, coz they said it was dead. No such thing though, works like a charm, if it wasn't for it's loudness I'd keep it :p I'd not recommend this card to any1 who likes a quiet pc. Even at idle it's noisy :p Now, to try tripple crossfire :p

Tx, the waterblock is a much better and silent solution ofcourse. But since i`m a newbie and moving my computer a lot, I should read a newbie guide....now i've found one in your sig. Cheers! :p.

Also contacted Danger Den already for some advise what to use for my system, they are very helpfull i must say.

nobody mentioned it might be UNWISE to lower the cooler fan speed?
Unless you also underclock/volt your card you risk frying it.

That looks good. What were your temps before? Mine are idling at 60C :(

And how did you remove the existing fans? Just pull them out of the heatsink?

The temps in it's original state:

Idle: 54 (loud)
Heavy load: 69 (really loud)

The 4850x2 produces a lot of heat, is the air flow in your case doing allright?

To remove the original fans, do the following.

- Remove the black case (around 8 screws on top of the case)
- Once removed, notice the 8 silver poles where the black case was mounted on....remove those (they are mounted on the heatsink).
- Then when you look at the fans, you should notice it is attached to the heatsink with each 3 screws, remove those along with the fans.
- Now you can mount other coolers. With the 92mm fans you could use two original screw holes if wanted. I've mounted mine with tie-rips (hope this is the proper english word :S.)

Tie-rips visual shot: http://www.audio-tuning-pithan.de/fotos/Kabelbinder.JPG :D

I've also tried to mount two 120mm fans, those are to large in my opinion, but it should be possible. I also don't know if that would give you better cooling results.

....maybe i`ll give it a try these days, just to get the results :D.

I'm using a Lian Li case, but it's perpetually summer where I am so ambient temps are high.

Thanks I'll look into getting fans...you're using the Noctua NF-B9? I'm browsing SVC and the low price/low fan/high airflow choices seem to be:
Noctua NF-B9 - 17dBa, 37CFM
Nexus DF1209SL-3 PW - 16dBa, 43CFM
Scythe SY1025SL12L - 14dBa, 28CFM
SilenX IXP-64-11 Ixtrema Pro - 11dBA, 32CFM
SilenX IXP-64-14 Ixtrema Pro - 14dBA, 42CFM

Wonder which I should get...the Nexus sounds too good to be true though, anyone has experience with it?

I believe those are called cable ties or zip ties :)

Check this: http://www.nexustek.nl/NXS-silentcasefans.htm

Basically the lowest noise level possible is given, with the max CFM possible...

don't forget that there is in the stores a new version for HD4850X2 with different fan speeds which should be more quieter

Same coolers, other BIOS only i`m afraid.

http://www.techpowerup.com/rev...ire/HD_4850_X2/30.html

I've modded my bios to make it stock more silent (12% fan speed), but when starting a game it'll spin up pretty fast to a noisy level :(. The stock coolers is simply cheap crap.

I've succeeded in taking the shroud off, and 4 of the poles from 1 heatsink with just my fingers. However the other 4 poles on the other heatsink for some reason are very tight - can't remove them with my fingers. Might have to use pliers.

As for the fan screws, man they are tiny! Even my smallest jewellers screwdriver couldn't get in. What did you use to unscrew them?

Oh and where are you tying the fans to? I don't see any hooks/holes where the cable ties can go through...

Thanks!

To remove the poles, I used a screwdriver which exacltly fiitted in the holes on top of the poles. I think pliers will do the trick.

To remove the fan screws i bought a cheap screwdriver in a local store.

Tying the fans is a bit tricky and hard to explain. I`ll take some pictures and upload those later today.

Thanks. I managed to remove the holes with a long nose plier, and the fan screws with a borrowed screwdriver from my colleague. However, there's some sort of epoxy on the heatsink that's holding the fan wire so I'll have to cut the wire to remove the fan. Don't have the replacement fans yet, so I'm running them shroudless with the case open, and idle temps dropped 12-13C instantly!

Hmm, I think you have to do something about the airflow of your casing as well... 12-13C is a big difference. You don't have to cut the wires of the original coolers, just pull a bit harder to pull the wire out of the heatsink ribs.

Photo's of the tie-rip construction will be available within 4 hours ;)

Well I just put the case panels back on, and it's idling at 49-51C, so it's not that bad compared to panels off. I'm still getting a ~10C improvement over the shrouded version. The shrouds need to come off!
