Hello, i'm planning to upgrade my 2 months old Sapphire DUAL-X R9 270. I bought one because it was relatively cheap and i am new to gaming so i didn't want to jump ahead...

Now that i bought a new PSU (i've had a stock one that came with PC, some 430W, 30$ crap; now i bought an XFX Pro Series 650W PSU) and began to like games am thinking about upgrading GPU.

My question is:
As i only play 1080P (i don't have and don't plan to buy 2K or 4K monitor) Which one is a better choice for me?
- SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X R9 280X for 251€,
- SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X R9 280X 3GB GDDR5 TRI-X for 285€
or
- ASUS R9 290 DirectCU II also for 285€

Sure Asus's R9 290 has 1+ gig of RAM but for 1080p does that really matter?
Should i buy Vapor X tri-x for the same money or should i save another 30€ and buy a regular Vapor x instead? If Vapor Xs are a better option, does Tri-x cooling make much of a difference? I guess OCing would have a benefit with additional cooling, right?

Also, how about my PSU choice?
MSI H81M-P33,
- i7 4790
- 1 (soon to be 2) 8GB DDR3,
- 1HDD,
- 1 SSD,
& one of those above

Thanks for any help guys

Your PC specs are fine, the XFX 650 is a solid choice.

As far as GPUs go, you might want to wait about 10 more days. New cards are about to be announced by AMD and at the very least this will drive prices down (flash sales etc) and you might find a better deal.
The 290 is significantly faster than the 280x. The Vapor-X is one of the best third party cooling solutions. The ASUS 290 DirectCUII is kinda crappy, ASUS' cooler is simply insufficient for the 290/290x series and the card will be noisy. Still, a lot better than the stock 290s.

I'm in a similar situation right now and I'm waiting for the new cards. If the price is right for the upcoming 380x or 390, I'll definitely be picking one up :).

It might be worth waiting and checking out the R9 3xx.

If you want to buy now get a R9 290 Tri-X. the Asus R9 290 DCII cooler is not good.

"At 41.1dB the 290 Tri-X OC beats a number of Tahiti based cards, including our 7970GE and Sapphire’s own 280X Toxic, and it even edges out Asus’s impressive 280X DirectCU II. This not only makes Sapphire’s 290 the quietest high-end card we have, but it also means we’re seeing Sapphire dissipate an estimated 250W of heat while only generating a very, very limited amount of noise while doing so. Or to put this another way, Sapphire’s 290 is 16dB quieter than the reference 290, nullifying our earlier noise concerns and then-some."

Thanks you! I'm not that irritated by the noise as i play with headphones. Oh and i'm buying it next month, i'm just doing a research now so hopefully prices will drop. Thanks for the tip.

I do not have the money for R9 290 Tri-x. My budget limit is 280€... In that bracket is either R9 280X vapor x tri-x or basic Asus R9 290. Any better R9 290 is 330€ +...

R9 290 DCUII is the best option here for 285 Euro. It's worth it over any 280X. If you aren't in a rush, wait to buy until the end of the month as R9 300 series is being announced June 16th, which means better products and last fire sale prices on 290s.
