Sanyo will enter the market this summer with its new Sanyo CRD-DV1 which does 4X DVD-R, 2X DVD-RW, and makes 1.4 GB CD-R/CD-RW. (The 1.3/1.4 GB CD-RW method is supposed to be different from Sony's.)

Now the questions are:

1) If it hits Japan by summer, when will it hit North America and Europe?
2) How useless are the 1.4 GB CD-Rs going to be?
3) How much is the 4X DVD-R media going to cost? (Mitsui is a great brand, but tends to be pricey.)

Ok, i just actually read the link.. heh.. 1.4GB on current media?? i think that's an attractive feature...if it works reliably.

now all we need are Rio/SlimX portables that use DVD-R (and 1.4 GB RW?), 4 GB of music per disc.

Then if someone puts out a 200-DVD-changer with MP3 support, I can fit my 1,200+ CDs into one small box, sweet!

Sony 400 CD changer: supports MP3 CD-R/W

Not a DVD-changer, but it will hold all of your CDs if encoded to MP3.

That sounds awesome! My biggest concern is media and finding a standard that will work across mulitple platforms. I know the DVD-Rs that I burn now are very hit and miss on different stand alone dvd players.

Man, that thing has incredible specs. 24x cd burning, double the space on CDR's and (finally!) 4x DVD burning. Can't wait.
