Ol Chris Kringle dropped off a package containing my new MSI NX 6600GT 128MB AGP card today. Now I need someone who has "Been There, Done That" to help me with setting it up properly the first time. I will be removing a PNY FX5200.
In what order do I want to do the change over to insure it gets done correctly the first time.
 
uninstall driver, remove old card, put in new card, install new driver

correct me if im wrong.

actually since they are both nvidia's i don't think you have to re-install the new detonator.
 
Sounds pretty straight forward. My main concern was what was going to happen when I uninstall the old drivers? What drivers will the video be running off of until I swap the cards and install the new drivers?
 
Since they are both Nvidia cards that use the same unified drivers, you can just swap cards I think. At least I do that with ATI cards.
 
I think when I did it, I updated the drivers under Device Manager>Display Adapters>Standard VGA>Properties and set it as Standard VGA or whatever, then when you shutdown and install the new card, you will boot it up with Standard VGA as if you just installed windows and it will go through the routine of trying to find the best drivers for your card and blah blah blah. If it doesn't do it automatically you just go to "Update drivers" again and then pop in the CD and it'll find the best drivers for your drive.
 
The FXs were Geforces too right? I know NV has seperate drivers for their Geforces, Quaddros, etc. Just makin sure.
 
Ya do not have to uninstall your present drivers. Just put your new card in your pc and power on. 1st and foremost if you have antivirus software then DISABLE it > assuming you have Win XP go to add/remove programs and remove your Nvidia display driver/control panel > also if you install drivers to the default location which is C:/ THEN go there (start>my computer) and delete the Nvidia folder that has your old driver in it > reboot > Disable any anti virus AGAIN (Norton will re enable virus protection every reboot if its configured this way) > upon reboot Win XP will automatically install a 2D driver (default with XP) and this is what you will then be running with > go to nvidias website and dnld the 66.93 forceware driver package > again MAKE sure antivirus (if applicable) is OFF > run the install on the 66.93 you just dnld'ed > reboot > configure to your liking > good ta go
 
Be carefull with that card, anand did a review of that card and he had problems keeping the heatsink on.
He noted the heatsink, only mounted on 2 points, easily came off the rams if the heatsink was touched in the wrong way. I don't understand why the 6600 gts heatsinks are not mounted at 4 corner points.

Thanks everyone. The card was $219 shipped from Egghead. I'll give the install a shot in the morning when the eyes are a bit fresher. I'm looking forward to see how much improvement I get. I'll run 3DMARK03 efore and after the swap.

Me also ordered this card, it comes next week 🙂

The MSI card reviews in the 6600GT Anandtech Shootout is the PCI-E version which has a different type of cooling than the MSI 6600GT AGP version judging from the pictures.

I haven't opened the box yet. how does the hsf solution look on the msi nx6600 gt agp?

update: saw picture at newegg; haven't opened up box at home yet. hsf looks supported on by 2 pin design with underside support bar.
