Sanity check before RAM purchase

I have a Dell XPS 8700 with 4x3gb of ram, 12gb total.

I want to upgrade and would be fine with 22gb and was looking at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Would that work fine as 2x8gb and 2x3gb = 22gb total, or do I need it all to match and buy 4 sticks of the new ram for 32gb total?

Normally, it is better to go with the least amount of DIMMs to get the RAM size you want.
While it could work, it could also not work. It just depends on many things, and usually, you won't know until you tried it.
