How are Sanibel and Captiva in early December? Would this be a good place to go for a weekend escape with my girlfriend? Any advice or experience would be appreciated. Thanks!

The hurricanes levelled those places....well, not completely but from what I hear they look like war zones.

As much as i'm sure they could use your business, i think much of the two islands are still recovering from Hurricane Charley.

Strangely enough, the pass that seperates the two islands was so bombarded with sand during the hurricane, that the pass completely filled in, bridging the gap between the two islands and creating one big island.

Absolutely beautiful place though.... Make sure to check out the Bubble Room if you go :D

Blind Pass has been closed the past few years. They dredged it open occasionally, but it always fills in anyway.

Winter is the popular time to go and is expensive traditionally. But with Charley's destruction, who knows. If you go--don't forget the DEET insect repellant. The no-see-ums will eat you alive!

The Bubble Room is an eclectic restaurant. Funky decor, somewhat pricey.

As a long time former Floridian, both Sanibel and Captiva are beautiful, and well recommended choices.

One word of caution: although the water is quite clear in many places, do be cautious in the water, as both locations feature sting rays and various jelly fish. Was hit twice on separate occasions by the sting rays (one in Sanibel, one in Captiva), and once by a jelly fish.

Enjoy.

My grandparents live there - it's absolutely beautiful and a very nice place to go, but right now it's still a complete mess and you'll be really missing the beauty of the island with all the plants and things they've lost, not to mention the construction equipment everywhere.
