Sangria

I have a great Sangria recipe that all my friends/family love. I will post it if anyone wants... but my question is:
what kind of wine do you use to make it? I prefer using a Beaujolais/Beaujolais Villages... you know, nothing too expensive, but something light-bodied and fruity.
I realize the Spanish make it with Spanish wines such as Rioja, but what else has anyone used and had good results with?

Edit: Added poll: do you prefer Cointreau or Grand Marnier in your Sangria?

Edit: Added recipe further down.

Title: Sangria... but you're right, I should have posted it in the body. Will correct...

Where's the recipe? 😛

1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
1 large lemon
1 large orange
1 small apple, cored and thinly sliced
1 (750 ml.) Beaujolais/Beaujolais Villages
1/2 cup Cointreau (or Grand Marnier)

Combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Thinly slice 1/2 of the lemon and 1/2 of the orange. Combine in large pitcher. Juice the other halves of the lemon and orange and add juice and rinds to the pitcher. Core and thinly slice the apple (The thinner the better). Add the apple, wine, Cointreau and chilled syrup to the pitcher and stir until well mixed. Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, about 2 hours (ideally 6 hours). Serve in a red wine glass with sugar on the rim and a few small ice cubes. Garnish with thin orange or lemon slice or both.

Edit: Prep time is ~10-15 minutes and I like to make two batches at once in this large Sangria pitcher I got from Mexico. 1 batch is about 6 servings.
