Clearly SandyBridge is perfect for the Air... I'd love one. I would have bought an Air already, if it wasn't for the fact that my 4 year old MBP actually has the same C2D CPU...

And upgrading just for battery and smaller size.. screen.. neh... I want a few more years of pow in there, right?

So, will they just updated the MBP's with Sandy in a few months or will they break their usual release cycles and update the Air as well?

Making me wait until fall to get a revamped SB Air would suck!

I doubt they'll break their upgrade cycle. The Sandy Bridge refresh will probably start with just the MBP and then eventually get to the MBA.

If you want a MBA why not just get one now? Apple laptops hold their value so well that it won't cost you a ton to buy one, use it for probably even a year and then sell when the new MBA hits.

I too am waiting for the update... But the good news is there was a rumor last week that the MBA could be updated as early as July. *crosses fingers*

Agreed, I was all set on buying one last week before the rumors of a possible update this summer came around. I know people are saying buy one now and then sell it later but it's easier said then done.

historically, the iPhone and iPod refreshes are like clockwork. MacBooks certainly vary somewhat.

MBPs are rumored for (early) March so an early summer MBA refresh seems plausible. Your guess is as good as Wall Street's.

Considering your current distaste for the CPUs, why not wait it out? I wouldn't want a new CPU that's only on par w/ NVIDIA's Kal-El. ;) I too have the first C2D model, for now I just wish it could take more RAM and had an SSD.

MacBook Air needs Sandy Bridge like air (pun intended :) ). That C2D is way past its prime. Circa 2008!

I wonder if Apple would update the 13" Air without the 11". Last I heard, intel doesn't have a 10W SB part, and that is the TDP that the 11" needs. It can meet the TDP of the 13".

This also assumes that the SB GPU is OpenCL compatible and powerful enough.

You have to keep in mind that Sandy Bridge's TDP includes it's gpu while Core 2's does not.

Sandy bridges gpu shouldn't have a problem matching or beating the 320m.

That doesn't answer the OpenCL question.

What manly says about the macbook upgrade cycles varying some what is a valid point, an early summer refresh would also coincide with lion. As we both have the first c2d model i also agree that the only "complaint" i have with it is the RAM cap and no SSD, so you might argue that I'd be satisfied with an Air,

However - I know I'll have my next macbook for another 4 years much like my current one. That won't be the case if I get a C2D one, so next gen architecture is a must i feel.

And yea, buying selling? Big hassle and indeed easier said than done...

If the MBP refresh is also a design update so it's the next (3rd) gen mbp's then I might just get one of those instead of waiting. If it's the same as now with simply upgraded cpu, then.. nah. I want next gen =) I'd especially like an MBP without optical drive.

I'm in the early summer camp for MBA update I think, early march MBP's.

Yeah, I definitely want my MBA air to last a while and would rather have the next generation architecture. I thought about getting a refreshed MBP but after comparing and thinking about the changes to the 15" MBP to 13" MBA, I think I would still rather have the MBA. Same resolution size, I don't need the optical, rather have SSD than 5400rpm HD and I feel like a fully upgraded 13" MBA will be almost the same price as a base 15" MBP.
