Sandy or Ivy the tick of the tock?

This states Ivy Bridge is the Tick. I always thought Sandy was a tick and the Ivy was the resultant tock.

Nope, SB is definitely a Tock. To be more precise, IB will be a Tick+.

'Tick' is the new process (22nm for IB)
'Tock' is the new microarch. (SB/Haswell)
Nehalem was shrinked to 32nm, and then SB was the 'new' arch on that node
IB is bringing 22nm, and is mostly a node-shrink of SB, although it has some new features embedded as well.

The easiest way to remember is that the Tick/Tock cycle is based of the manufacturing process. In all honesty, I don't think it matters much, we all know Ivy is the shrink of Sandy.

The whole 'tick-tock' idea is conceptualizing ideas people had for years. Don't build on a shaky foundation...

Yeah, Tick-Tock has definitely kept Intel focused and on track. This is the way to do it, and once this is scaled down to the mobile stuff, we'll see some fun stuff ahead.

The Tick Tock makes it easy for the industry and purchasers to know what is coming. It also helps remove the temptation on those businesses to try and do both a process shrink and a new architecture at the same time.

Imagine if AMD and NVidia did the same thing with their graphics cards, they might improve their chances of releasing on time with each new process and architecture and giving the buyer a better idea of when the next generation was coming and what its likely improvements would be.

Unfortunately they are still at the mercy of TMSC or GloBo or wherever they fab the chips. AMD is in a tough spot now with no fabs of their own.
