I hope this topic hasn`t been covered by someone, I am going to built a new pc with choice of 2500k or 2600k in the next week(b3 P67 Mobo will arrive next friday in nz).

I have no plan to buy third party cpu cooler atm , gona stick with the original intel cpu cooler.

so has anyone actually attempted the OC with intel original cooler? or highly not recommend to do any OC without a good air cooler?
What would be the best options for using the original cpu cooler?
yeah I know you can measure the temp during OC and test, but I `d rather to hear someone who actually experienced it.

off topic, we are currently running really low supply on 2500k in nz.
I have the following choice

i5 2500 at 320nzd
i5 2500k 355nzd
i7 2600 458nzd
i7 2600k 528nzd

to pair with hd6850

what would you suggest for general use and gaming purpose?

I've never tried to overclock on the stock cooler as it's really not a good idea. It can be done and your milage will vary seeing as the stock cooler is very small. I wouldn't try for more than 4Ghz though.

If your primarily game/office work/email then the 2500k is the sweet spot, but if you do video encoding or anything that can take advantage of hyper threading then the 2600k is a nice choice. But if i was you i'd get the 2500k as it's nicely priced at only $355NZ and it seems to meet your requirements very well.

Then with the saved cash you can get an aftermarket cooler ;)

Well you can't really overclock with the non-k chips so its between the 2500k and 2600k. IMO the 2600k does not offer enough over the 2500k to warrant the price.

Get the 2500k and stay in the high 3 to maybe 4ghz range.

stock CPU cooler, stock clocks(3.3) stress, you'll hit maybe 60C... if you want to overclock to 4.2-4.4, it'll hit 80C

I upgraded to a hyper cooler 212+ for $28, on stock stress(3.3ghz), it went around 45C. at 4.4ghz, it hit 60C. dunno anything above 4.5ghz, because my Intel DP67DE board throttles the OC turbo after a short time(10 minutes at 4.4ghz, 1 minute at 5.0 ghz), cant give you a better sense of temps at 5.0ghz

Intel chips, regular temp should be below 85C... how badly do you need the speed?

What are you using to stress with? I get 80C on stock with LinX. No AVX either. I guess it could be how the motherboard is setting the fan speed though.
