sandisk usb card reader trouble!

hi, have a problem! just got a usb smartmedia reader, when i go to drag and drop my folder containing my photos the computer freezes, if i drag and drop one photo at a time i have no problems. is this a memory problem? i have a tbird 800, 128 meg pc100 memory, tnt2 vidcard on a biostar motherboard. thanks for any help!

It's the transfer rate of the USB hardware/software. I used to have an external USB CDRW. When reading off the drive (i.e. in Windows Explorere) it would take forever to transfer the data. Never locked up though. Id' have about a 7-8 second lag that the keyboard/mouse would be frozen, but it would be fine after the data transfer. You'd see the screen "jump and jitter" while the data moved in chunks. I don't think there's a fix. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. You'll either have to only take a few files ata time, or use a smaller folder. Good luck.

the file i was transfering was fairly small 6-7 jpegs. i'll try it tonite and be more patient and see if it unlocks itself

bacillus, do you copy all photos together or one at a time. ive been right clicking and sending the whole file to my brief case. do you delete the folder after transfer? or do you delete in the camera

Ick! Briefcase=EVIL. After a fresh install of windows, the first thing I do is drag that pupply to the wastebasket and flush it. Better to use Explorer. Here's what I do with my digicam. It's a USB camera. The cam has a flashcard (memory stick actually) inside. Connect cable from cam to pc. Turn on Cam. Double click My Computer on desktop. Click on "removable drive" meaning the card in the camera. Drag files to folders one by one. Never had a prob.

so your saying the briefcase location could be a problem, why? if thats it that would be an easy fix!

<, do you copy all photos together or one at a time>
usually all together!

<do you delete the folder after transfer? or do you delete in the camera >

no, I leave the folder & any deletion done in the camera itself!

the transfer of 10-15 Mb of photos is still slow even though its ubs transfer. I pity those with serial port transfer!
as for your freezing problem, is your usb irq sharing with any other hardware?

havent checked the irq yet, if it is sharing how do i change it? sorry about all the stupid questions, i guess im lucky, normally i dont have many problems or they are of the variety that im capable of solving(simple ones!)

i've had the same problem as you with my usb sandisk CF reader. i try to transfer digital photos (all of them at a time, 30 or more at once), but after transferring 6 or 7, all of my usb devices will lock up and my system will become unstable. And what's worse is that the images on my card are unreadable by my camera or my computer when I reboot.

I was using this reader on my previous machine with no problem at all. I am currently using VIA VT83C572/VT82C586 PCI to USb controller. Does this have something to do with it? someone said that it has to do with rate transfer. How do I adjust the rate? help!

they say that any USB port with a VIA chipset is basically worthless and should be replaced by a non-VIA chipset PCI usb card. Save yourself the headache--abandon your board's usb and get a PCI card...if indeed you're using a VIA PCI/USB controller. Your board's usb may be fine for mice and keyboards, but maybe not for high-bandwidth items like a digital camera or card reader.
