I plug the thing in and I hear an odd noise, different from the noise compared to plugging in other USB devices. My computer does not recognize the device.

In the device manager the computer sees it with the yellow ! symbol, here is what it says about the player.

When I try to run the automatic driver update, here is what I get.

Now, what has me super confused is when I go and plug it into the computer upstairs, it pops right up and works flawlessly. I have tried it on all my usb ports and get the same result every time. What on earth could be causing this?

Thanks!

A wise choice (followed linky from health & fitness post).

Unless MTP mode is desired for a specific reason then use MSC instead.

The original firmware from last year required forcing MSC mode by switching the player to hold and then holding down the center buttom before plugging in. Subsequent firmwares added a USB mode option to the Settings menu. Firmware files are available via sandisk and anythingbutipod forums (as opposed to Sandisk Updater proggy).

The MSC driver can be manually selected in Device Manager. I am not familiar with MTP so cannot help you there so check out those forums.

For headphones, I am very pleased with the JVC HA-FX66. They stay-in and provide excellent sound quality and isolation. Their cost is also relatively low: $25 shipped.

I bought the 4GB version today. How long does it take to charge? It's been charging for about 4 hours now. I switched to MSC because MTP would crash windows. Will get to test it out tomorrow when I go to the gym. I also feel like it needs a case. Feels/looks very scratch-prone.

Clip- nice idea, total POS. Went through 3 in 6 months- 1st on died in less than 30 days- replaced by Amazon.

2nd one died in 3 months- sent to Sansa- took 6 weeks to get it replaced.

3rd one, the replacement from Sansa lasted 2 weeks- Sansa service was so slow and pathetic I just decided to eat the cost and get and iPod. Even if it needs service, turnaround time is 7-10 days max.

Don't worry about buying a case for it- it won't last long enough to warrant it.

Wow. One can only presume your charger/PC was killing them.

I have been enjoying mine for almost a year sans complaint. Case-wise, I got a silicon skin from meritline (at the time about $3 shipped). There are gobs of accessories available; see ebay.
