SanDisk Exteme 120GB on sale at Newegg!

SanDisk Extreme SDSSDX-120G-G25 2.5"

With Promo Code: EMCYTZT2011

Storge Review claims it is to be one the fastest SF ssd.
What really knocked our socks off though are the 4K QD1 random reads of 8,144 IOPS, beating the Intel SSD 520 by 7% and the OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS by 28%. This is largely thanks to SanDisk's own MLC Toggle NAND.

OK, WTF happened? Last time I was paying attention, Sandforce was the cat's meow. Intel ditched their own controller, and built their SSD with a Sandforce controller.
Why suddenly is everybody down on them? Some reliability issue I assume?

Thanks.

I'm no expert on the technology, but in my experience building 50+ machines with SSDs, it went something like this: Sandforce was in the fastest SSDs (mostly OCZ) before Samsung and Intel (and others) were competing with their own controllers. Unfortunately, the OCZ drives had a high failure rate. Whether that was due to the SF controller or to other OCZ issues, I don't know. Then Sandforce2 came out and OCZ again leapt out ahead in terms of speed, again with relatively high failure rates. And again, I don't know if that's the SF2's fault, or OCZ. I know lots of people on these forums and elsewhere have been very happy with OCZ and other SF and SF2 drives, including good drives from Mushkin and others. W/R/T Intel, I assume you're referring to the 330 series, which uses a SF2 controller, but Intel wrote its own firmware for that line, in theory to avoid some of the problems with other SF-based drives. In general, the Samsung 830 and Intel (X25, 320, 520, pretty much any series without a SF controller) have generally been regarded as the best combination of speed and stability for as long as I can remember.

I have Samsung and OCZ. My Samsung has been very fast and reliable since the start. The OCZ is pretty fast but wasn't so reliable at first. It needed a lot of firmware fidgeting. I personally don't see any 'deals' here. I see have seen drives on par with this at almost 50c a GB.

I snagged the Samsung during the last sale and while this drive tests out extremely well, I opted for the Samsung primarily for its performance with incompressible data which chokes SF drives quite well. The tool box and reliability of Samsung are other factors as well.

Just ordered - great deal for those of us in Cali - no tax and free shipping.

We in CA still owe the tax, as use tax.

Not paying it is tax cheating and a lie signing the tax return.

On the drive - I see the list above suggesting Samsung and Intel for reliability, isn't Crucial also on that list? Read here it is.

Yes, Crucial makes quality drives as well in terms of reliability, but the newest series (M4) uses a Marvell controller that many folks aren't too fond of. For example: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2246925

Either way, oversight on my part to leave it out of my previous post as a reliable (although not particularly fast) SSD.

After using a lot of SSDs for the last few years, it's Samsung, Crucial, or Intel for me, or Western Digital. 😛 How much is your time worth?

If you read the SSD reviews here, you'll here BSOD and undetected drives for Sandforce SSDs. I myself am a victim with a Sandisk Ultra (they RMAed me an extreme, have yet to put it in yet). Now I only use non Sandforce SSDs and haven't had a problem since (have 6 Samsungs in my personal systems so far![darn you hotdeals])

That thread you linked is complaining about the MOTHERBOARD marvell SATA3 controller, not the SSD.

Good catch, I clearly missed that. In any event, what I was trying to say was that I like the Crucial drives (used several M4s in builds for others) more than drives with SF controllers, but not as much as Samsung and Intel drives.
