it's running like a USB1 drive...transferring a couple of songs over takes forever. i did a format on drive. do you think it affected the drive somehow? is there a way to fix this?

might be my imagination or my high expectations. is there a way to test the read and write speed of the drive?
 
Install your motherboard drivers to fix the low USB speed issue. I don't know what drivers AMD-specific chipsets use. Perhaps somebody familiar with AMD will be able to assist.
For read/write tests search for HDtune. It is a benchmark for drive speeds.
