Hi all,

Looking to upgrade CPU soon. Should I get a SanDiego, or wait for X2? Does anyone have a first date on X2 launch, other than Summer?

Thanks

If you've got a 3500+, you *really* don't need a new San Diego based CPU. Unless you have extra money that is...
I'd say you should way for X2.

y not just wait til the gaming industry actually implement X2?

not many games is going to use dual core technology since gaming industry know that MOST user are still using single-core. they are not going to sell a game that only 40% (assuming one year later) of the population can take advantage of the game.

I would say, at least 2-3 years before gaming industry would actually start making games for dual-core.

I believe June is the official ship/launch of the X2, but its probably going to be only for system vendors.

Having said that, I don't believe it will be 2-3 years before software writers implement multi-threading code. 40% of the market base using dual core CPUs is a LOT of people and more than enough to justify code writers to use multi-threaded code. Many existing games and apps can be retrofitted to take advantage of dual cores as well.

In addition, you don't need to have a multi-threaded app to take advantage of a dual core CPU. With an X2, you will be able to play HL2 and encode a DVD at the same time, for example, with minimal speed loss. I would love to be able to do that right now. :)
