SAN tools not working in a new Debian Etch install

the tool is called ADMSNAP for use with EMC SAN equipment. It manages LUN snapshots on the SAN. I have to install this from an rpm (no deb provided from EMC, unfortunately).

If I try to list the LUNs in a new Etch install with "admsnap list" I get this:
There were no devices found whose LUN WWN could be listed.

But, on the exact same hardware, if I install Sarge, "admsnap list" returns the WWNs of the two attached LUNs (as it should), and if I upgrade that system to Etch, then it continues to work.

I can't figure it out, I've tried installing a bunch more packages that were carried over from Sarge; I've even tried converting the admsnap rpm to a deb on a Sarge machine and then installing it on Etch, but nothing works.

Any ideas of what additional package I could be missing or some setting that would be carried over from Sarge?
