THAT guy
I'm back in NJ visiting family and the local produce wholesaler (Corrados in Clifton) will begin selling bushels of San Marzano in the first week of August. I live in Massachusetts and will be driving back up there today. I'd love to pick up a bushel for myself but can't justify a trip back to NJ just for tomatoes. Therefore, anybody know where I can get a bushel of S.M. tomatoes in Mass? I'm thinking Haymarket produce stands in Boston might have them but I've never looked. Anybody know for sure?

I love SM tomatoes -- but never had them fresh before...I usually buy the fancy ones in a can for my pizza sauce. Expensive, but worth it.

San Marzano are the absolute best for sauces.

I never get them fresh, though. This right here is perfect:

san marzano's are one variety of plum tomato - a really good one. Plum tomatoes grown here in NJ - and NJ is GREAT for growing tomatoes - are often labeled "san marzano" even if they aren't the authentic san marzano variety. AND, even if they are the actual san marzano variety, some people insist that if they're grown here, they aren't nearly as good as the ones grown in Italy, because the soil and climate are different.

So you can have fun endlessly arguing with other italian food addicts.

I was in Corrado's (Wayne) and noticed the sign saying Jersey Plum Tomatoes coming Soon, but didn't notice anything about San Marzanos (wasn't looking for it) . They wouldn't lie or misrepresent their stuff- they're great guys.

Good luck finding them in Mass. I'd look on chowhound for that? You should be able to find them, considering all the italian grandmothers up there 🙂 .

Southern NJ grows the best tomatoes in the US. Drive back for a couple of bushels and can them yourself.

Are they better in Italy? Irrelevant. You can't get them fresh. If you want the best tomatoes in the USA, New Jersey is the place to find them, and right now is the season to do it.

If you wait now, you have to wait until next year. NJ isn't a far drive from Mass.
