I'm going to San Francisco in 2 days...what should I do there? I've been to through the airport plenty of times but never into the actual city and attractions. advice please.

Pier 39. Ghiradelli, Check Marin Headlands, Stinson Beach, Point Reyes, GG Bridge tour, Montery Bay Aquarium, Carmel, Big Sur, Half Moon Bay. Go fishing at all areas. Head for Bean Hollow state beach 20 miles south of Half moon bay and explore the reefs and wildlife within the rocks etc.
Thats just some. Lots to do here.

alcatraz is pretty cool

every kind of dining is within walking distance of fishermans wharf

There's a TON of touristy stuff. Pick up a tourist map from the car rental place

chinatown is very cool

be sure to drive the crookedest street

Check out Haight theres alot of interesting stores there. Also you have to eat at Asqew Grill the food there is awesome.

Alcatraz is fun- highly recomend the walkman tour. Don't eat around the warf or piers- very overpriced and not that good. If you want something within walking distance, hit Columbus street- lots of good Itlaian restaurants (I really liked Michalangelos).

Pier 39 is pretty touristy- I don't think its worth it (except if its on the way to the Alcatraz ferry- which you mght want to make ticket reservations for, depending on when you go)- there's not much there except souviners and other over-priced crap.

The MOMA is pretty good, and its within a 5-10 minute walk of the cartoon museum (its small, but usually has pretty interesting exhibits that change every few months).

Haight/Ashbury is always fun- lots of little restaurants, bars, and shops (and a huge music store- Amoeba).

If you have a car, the Golden Gate Bridge is always nice (but go early to aviod traffic- SF traffic, as well as the whole Bay Area, pretty much sucks for traffic). If you do drive across the Bridge coming from SF, take your first LEFT after and go up the hill- great place to see everything- the "Scenic spot" is on the right, but its more crowded and not as good a view.

Also if you have a car, Muir woods isn't that far away and has giant redwoods and is great to hike around. And if you like wine, Sonoma is about an hour North.

Monteray Bay Aquarium is nice, but its a few hours away- if you do decide to drive down there, take Rt. 1- its a little slower, but its right on the water and is very scenic.

Chinatown is okay- some intersting stores, but probably worth seein (and its reasonably near the piers and Columbus street)

NOTE: if you're looking for a Pier, remember the ODD numbered piers are on the NE side of the city, and the EVEN ones are on the SE side (they don't go 1,2,3, etc)

Lots of fun neighborhoods with places to eat (my favorite thing to do there)- Brother's Korean BBQ in the Richmond disrtict is out of this world.

If you comment on what you like to do (and if you have a car), I may be able to recomend more stuff (I've lived in the Bay Area for 8 years now)

Ride cable cars, and ride the streetcars. Take a boat ride.

Go to any corner at the hunter's point district and ask a brother for a dollar. Have someone else tape the event. It'll be most memorable. Haight is not what it used to be. Instead of hippies, you have young thugs and criminals now. Nice.

But seriously, take a visit to Ocean Beach, the old site of the Sutro Bath house, which they now call Cliff House. Great view at that location. The Cliff House restaurant's ok, pretty expensive. There's an old arcade machine museum below the Cliff House restaurant, lots of interesting stuff there. If you walk further up the hill, you can see Golden Gate bridge on the right, around the cliff.

I think that area is right after the French Legion of Honor from where you can see the GG Bridge. Place called Lands End. Baker Beach and China Beach are not far off too.
All in all get a map that will show the Golden Gate National Recreation area which is spread out pretty wide.

^ thread revival

So I'm heading there in a month, just for a couple of days and I see "what to do" has been covered... but what about places to stay (hotel).. priceline lists the following areas:
Cathedral Hill Area Details
Civic Center Area Area Details
Fisherman's Wharf Area Details
San Francisco Airport (SFO) Area Details
San Mateo Area Details
South San Francisco Area Details
Union Square East - Embarcadero Area Details
Union Square West Area Details

We'll also have a car there - is this a problem for the city (like it is in NY) ?

the Gardens were beautiful,
the Chinese bridge was Steep!

Fishermans warf is smelly on a hot day,

do not feed the Sea Lions, seals, etc.

Have fun!

If you drop a quarter near Market and Castro, don't bend over to pick it up!!

Whatever you do, just spend, spend spend...

City government is going broke!
