Kids get excited about toys -> kids pester their parents to go to McDonalds -> parents buy Happy Meal.

Wow, I wish I would've had a parent who did whatever the hell I wanted when I was a kid.

In other words -- tough crap. If parents can't do their damn job properly, they shouldn't have kids to begin with.

So which is it? Kids want the bad food? Fine, nothing changes for them. Or do they want the toy? Now they get the toy with a healthy meal. Where's the downside?

I think the toy is still available as an additional purchase even with the "unhealthy" meal and I think it is absurdly cheap. Want to take a wild guess what's going to happen?

You can't say that the toys are not what make the kids want the food, and in the same breath complain about banning the toys for the unhealthy food. That makes no sense.

You absolutely can. Some of us actually believe that parents should be the one making the decision on what to feed their kid and that a government shouldn't try to dictate food choices with silly, meaningless actions like this one.

You guys can laugh at SF, but they are enjoying the free publicity and laughing all the way to the bank with tourist money.

Not wanting to support SF is the reason I don't visit SF. They haven't got my money for a few years now. Sucks too cause I like a lot of shit there, it was one of my favorite places to visit as a kid.

You lost me at the very first thing you said. How does child pestering = parent buys happy meal? Parents are the final decision makers period, the child doesn't get to make any decision. Eventually the little shit will shut the fuck up because they aren't going to get shit.

So why market to kids with the toys in the first place? Oh right, because it works... Why can't the city council regulate the marketing so it works to get them to eat fruits?

So it is the government's job to tell people what to eat? Even if indirectly doing so?

Uh... McDonalds has offered fruit with Happy Meals for years, if parents aren't taking advantage of it that's THEIR FAULT AGAIN. Seriously the entire problem is THE PARENTS, how do you not understand this?

How do you not understand that this is a simple regulation that doesn't restrict anybody except the fast food restaurants?? Parents can get their kids whatever god damn food they want. THE PARENTS can buy their kids the healthy food with the toy, or they can buy the unhealthy stuff and pay extra for the toy. QQ libertarians.

Have you ever heard of the Farm Bill? Here's a hint: The reason empty calories are so cheap and make up such a large percentage of our diet is that the government exerts huge forces on the agriculture industry through subsidies.

That happy meal with the cheeseburger would be a lot more expensive if cows weren't raised on publicly subsidized corn.Yet instead of complaining about that, you're complaining about a local government restricting giving away toys with the subsidized federal government beef and cheese, as if giving away toys with subsidized federal government beef and cheese is some kind of right that San Francisco is impinging upon.

How about this-- a local government is fighting the federal government's massive engineering of food market forces.

Who said I agree with subsidized agriculture?

Sucks for you, but for every one of you there are people who hear about SF on TV and come visit. SF has always been a liberal city, and one of the most visited ones, especially relative to its size.

It's pretty silly to boycott an American location for policy reasons. Just like it's silly to boycott Arizona because of its immigration law. It's not like SF is 100% leftie crazies. It's a big center of business for example.

Because that's what they were elected to do. Local governments regulate a LOT of stuff

where do you draw the line. whats the one thing that government would regulate that would impact something you may enjoy and as a result pisses you off for interfering in your personal life and freedom to do it?

I imagine when government uses the commerce clause to force Americans to purchase K&N air filters.

I had a Big Mac for lunch. I probably should've gotten a Happy Meal and posted the picture of my toy in this thread. :awe:

Yesterday, I had Burker King for lunch and McDonald's for dinner. Maybe I'll get KFC for lunch today!

edit: and I should add that I am of fantastic health and physical fitness, despite eating fast food now and then. The SF city council apparently thinks I don't exist.

Here's a hint for you: No toys means the unhealthy food is less appealing to kids. It's not exactly a leap to realize that fast food consumption will go down from its current level if the toys are banned. Have you never even taken care of a child? They'll pester you to "go to McDonalds" largely because of the advertising, including those stupid little toys. It's not just the food.

Parents are supposed to prevent their kids from smoking, but we still restrict cigarette advertising... Parents are supposed to prevent their kids from watching mature movies, but we don't let kids go into theatres alone if they're underage.

I spoke with a group of my friends about this when it was proposed. The consensus was that when we were kids and wanted happy meals, the toy was, by far, the LEAST appealing part of the meal. I don't think I ever spent more than 3 seconds with the toy before I went, "Well, this is f'ing lame" and tossed it. Kids eat happy meals because .... they like junk food.

Bullshit.

You can buy a 50 lb bag of rice and a 50lb bag of beans for $32. This lasts us like two months.

You can buy a 10 lb bag of apples for $4.

And so on and so forth.

I'd make money on food stamps.

Banning advertising because it is too effective is lol-worthy. Daily show does a good job as always.
